What a smart home can control

Most jobs start with these three. Each is wired differently, so choose before the walls close.

  • A hand holds a phone showing a living room lights screen with a brightness dial

    Lighting

Dimming, scenes and schedules from a phone or a wall keypad. Smart lighting options are part of the electrical and lighting work.

  • Slim black wall control with a temperature display and round dial on a pale stone-effect wall

    Climate

Thermostats and controls for split and central AC, so rooms cool when you need them. The AC and electrical teams plan this together.

  • White bullet-style security camera mounted on a dark post against a plain white sky

    Security and access

Cameras, door entry and sensors that alert your phone. Cable routes and power points are easiest to hide before walls are finished.

Wired or wireless smart controls

Many homes mix both. The balance depends on the rooms and what is already built.

Easiest time to fit

Wired
During a renovation, while walls and ceilings are open
Wireless
Any time, including in a finished home

Signal and power

Wired
Does not depend on signal strength
Wireless
Depends on signal strength and on devices staying powered

Changing it later

Wired
Moving a control point can mean opening a wall
Wireless
Devices are easier to move or swap

Effort up front

Wired
More cabling and more planning
Wireless
Less cabling, so quicker to set up

Often used for

Wired
Switches, keypads, lighting circuits and AC controls
Wireless
Sensors, cameras, add-ons and rooms already finished

A common split is wired for the core controls and wireless for add-ons. The assessment recommends a mix for your rooms.

Decisions for a smart-home plan

These choices decide cable runs, back boxes and where the control equipment lives.

Which rooms and functions come first?
List what you want controlled today and what you may add later. Extra cable runs and spare capacity are far easier to add while the walls are open.
Where will switches, keypads and panels go?
Place them by how you move through the home: near doors and beds, at hand height. Each one needs a cable back to the board.
Where does the control equipment live?
Hubs, network gear and power supplies need a reachable spot with power, a network connection and room to breathe. A cupboard or utility room is typical.
What should keep working in a power cut?
Think about door locks, cameras and the network. Anything that must stay on needs its own supply planned in from the start.
Who controls what?
Decide which household members get which controls, and keep the account details in your own name.

How a smart-home install runs

Home automation has been part of the offer since 2018. The job follows the same six steps as the other systems.

How every renovation runs
  1. 01

    Initial consultation and assessment

Walk the home with the team, list what you want controlled and check the existing wiring, AC and network.

  2. 02

Planning and design of the automation system

Agree which functions are wired and which are wireless, and where every control point, cable run and piece of equipment goes.

  3. 03

    Installation of automation components

Cabling, controls and devices are installed, ideally while walls and ceilings are open.

  4. 04

    Thorough testing and inspection

Each control, scene and schedule is tested against what you asked for.

  5. 05

    Final adjustments and cleanup

Settings are tuned and the work area is cleaned up.

  6. 06

    Customer walkthrough and satisfaction check

You are shown how everything works and check it matches the plan. Support continues after the job is done.

When approvals come into it

Some smart-home work touches shared or external parts of a building: cameras that face common areas, gate or door equipment, or changes to the incoming electrical supply. These can need permission from the developer or community and the relevant authority. Check before you buy equipment. Permits and approvals is one of the services on offer.

Smart-home questions, answered

Can smart controls be added to a finished home?

Often, yes, using wireless devices. Wired controls are far easier to fit while the walls are open, which is why a renovation is the natural time to plan them.

Do I need a wired system?

Not always. Wireless suits add-ons and finished rooms, and wired suits core controls such as switches and AC. Many homes mix both, as the table above shows.

Will it still work if the internet goes down?

That depends on how the system is built. Wall switches and wired controls can be designed to keep working locally, while phone control and remote access need a connection. Ask for this to be planned in.

Do you install smart lighting?

Yes. Smart lighting options are part of the electrical and lighting work, and home automation has been part of the offer since 2018.

How does the estimate work?

The estimate is free, and no obligation or upfront payment is required to ask for one. Before work begins the quote is broken down step by step so you know exactly what you are paying for.
